First, I want to say that I know about buying handmade and living pretty luxuriously on a shoestring budget because that’s what we do! I don’t want to say how much we make annually, that’s just not done, but I’ll let you know that when my psychiatrist sister asked one time and I told her, it gave her more than a little giggle. But then I pointed out some of the areas where we saved money that she chose to spend money and she saw how we were able to get by fabulously on an income that seemed impossible to make ends meet with by her standards. I hope that these suggestions will help inspire you, but don’t think you have to do all of them, or that they’re the only answers.
The key to being able to afford to buy handmade on a shoestring budget is looking close and hard at what you’d be willing to do without or to do with less of in order to be able to buy more amazing handmade goods.
That’s the first step: take a look at the things you spend money on, split it up into categories, and then decide if it’s worth it to you to spend that amount on each category. You might be surprised what you find! (We used to keep track of every penny by hand on a calendar and tally them up every month by category, as suggested in the awesome book: Your Money or Your Life by Vicki Robin and Joe Dominguez.) Just recently we discovered Mint.com and can’t imagine how we kept track of our money without it! Mint.comwill import your transactions from your bank and other accounts, you can choose categories for each transaction and then see a summary of how much you’re spending on what. There are even options for creating a budget and a place to see if you’re reaching your savings goals! I highly recommend this site (and that’s not an affiliate link, I really use and love it!)
