Teaching Procedures in the Classroom

As most of you know I am a teacher, and procedures are one of the biggest thing to get down in the first few weeks of school.  Brennon, has wrote an awesome piece about how to get your kids ready this school year.
He writes:
As a teacher – whether at a university, elementary school, or community center –
you will inevitably come to discover that certain groups of students “jive” better
than others. You could be using the exact same curriculum with the exact same
number of students, and yet one class will be more successful than the other. The
key difference is classroom dynamic.

How the students feel about each other will largely affect how they feel about the
class, and how they choose to behave during it. A positive dynamic is essential for a
strong class. Performing “icebreakers” on the first day is an excellent procedure for
producing a desirable dynamic.

Now, I know you probably hated “icebreakers” as a kid and didn’t see the point.
Why should we have to play memory games with each other’s names? What’s the point
of these silly trust activities? But, despite your unwillingness to admit it, I bet you
enjoyed them just a little bit. There is such a thing as a fun icebreaker. If it takes the
form of a game, especially an active game that requires movement, positive energy
will fill the room.

Fun and laughter bring comfort, which brings a sense of security, which means that
students will fearlessly participate in the class. Of course, you can’t play games all
day long and there are times when everyone needs to get down to business, but by
devoting the first day or day and a half to icebreakers, you start the class off on the
right foot.

Remember to involve yourself, as the teacher, in the activities as well. Approach
students on their level and don’t spend all day behind a desk. If students feel you
care, they will respect you more for it, and respect is the foundation for a successful
class.
