How to Get Started in the Business of Primitives
So you want to sell primitives, but you have no idea where to begin. I have put together some ideas that may help you to get started in the right direction.
First you have to figure out what type of primitives you are going to make to sell. Is it wooden reproductions of furniture and items, paintings, stitcheries, dolls, etc... It is not a good idea to spread yourself too thin. Do not say oh I am going to do it all because you may be taking on more than you can handle. Focus on one or two items, do it well. It is better to have quality over quantity.
Next, find your audience. Start investigating on the internet where to sell your items. Will you do better on Ebay, Etsy, blogging or having your own website. Just starting out, I would not put my money into my own website just yet, but use social networks and Etsy/Ebay to get my name out there. It is low start up costs and may reap big rewards. When you start to sell items, you can ask the customer to be added to the mailing list and build your clientele from there.
Once you have your clientele, then you can focus on building and expanding your business. Don't just go for free advertising, do some paid advertising as well. There are some cheaper and some more expensive ways to advertise. I use both the internet and in print magazines. You just have to search around until you find what you want. Also, set yourself a budget, and do not go over that budget, plain and simple!
Ok, so you got your type of primitives, you have found your audience, built your clientele, advertised, now what? Open your own website? Join a marketplace? The possibilities are endless. You choose your destiny from here and keep building on it. If it is your passion, you put in some hard work and dedication ie( long hours by computer) , your business should be a great success! Good luck and as always *Prim Blessings*, Sue
