My Story

So recently I have found out my son was diagnosed with ADHD which stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.  Being a teacher, I have kind of known that he has had it because he has always been loud, always wanting to climb on things in situations that were not appropriate to be doing so and just always on the go.  Recently he has been getting into trouble at school a lot.  he used to get in trouble in daycare and kindergarten but this year has been the worst.  I finally broke down and took the paperwork to his teacher and I filled out mine and we both gave him almost a perfect score to define him as ADHD.  A lot of people think oh just beat it out of them or oh they are bad parents but this is not the case.  When reading up on it, it is a disorder that affects the brain kind of like depression.  A certain chemical is being blocked by the brain that allows them to slow down. They say it is hereditary.  No I didn't do any crazy pills or anything LOL  So now that we got it diagnosed and he has meds, he is only on his second day but I have seen changes.
There is no more climbing all over when we eat as he would eat then get up and walk and then come back and eat then get up or be really loud.  He couldn't wait his turn and such.  Anyway that has stopped, the arguing and aggression with his bro has stopped as he did push his bro before meds and he had to go get stitches so that has all stopped and he is talking mostly in a normal tone of voice and waiting his turn.

I didn't want to do it but I cannot believe the peace and quiet my home has been.  I was so used to the circus and chaos that I don't remember it ever being this way.  So far he is good no zoning out or not eating or anything so we shall see.  He has also been coming home on blue the last 2 days which has made him so happy as he was on red everyday before.  He was so depressed before that he didn't want to go to school and hated it, now he is wanting to go.  I am so glad I did this as I do not want to break his spirit for school as he is only 6 going on 7.  I just wanted to share this story and get it off my chest.  This is what I have been dealing with along with some of my own health issues so been slacking a bit ....Thanks for taking the time to listen to me......Have a great night everyone......

Oh Sue,
Love and lots of hugs to you and to your sons.
I am glad that your son is responding well to the meds and that you had the courage to go ahead with getting the diagnosis made, etc.
I hope you will have a lovely Valentine's Day weekend, my friend.
Love,
Cindy

It sounds like you made the right decision, even if it was a hard one to do. I am sure your son will be happier also. take care

hunni, i am so glad you hav got some help for him and things are improving. putting a child onto medication is never an easy decision to make, but if it is working for everyone in the family and the child is happier, then i think you have made the right decision. amazing how only 2 days into the meds, there is already imrpovement.

Thanks Victoria and Annie. It is amazing. He was so hyper and wanted friends but when the neighbor kids would come over he was super bossy and would push them or holler at them and he was doing the same thing at school. He would argue with the teacher and climb around the classroom when he should have been sitting. I told my hubby long time ago he had this but he was kind of in denial about it and so he wouldn't help me out, so finally I just took it upon myself to do it and already in 2 days there is a big change for the better. We go back in 2 weeks to get a checkup...

You have done the right thing for your son and yourselves. My daughter is a sufferer and has been on meds since she was about the same age she is 14 now has OCD and anxiety issues but on the whole she is OK. Starting high school was a big step and one we sought counselling for her. People that don't live with these conditions can't know what it is like and how great your kids are when they get the help they so badly need. Good luck with the future.

It's hard to watch your child suffer & only a parent knows how much emotional suffering comes along with ADHD. My son was diagnosed ADHD at the end of second grade. He could not read because (as the doctor put it) his mind is moving faster than his eyes can cross the page. We, along with the specialist, made the difficult decision to start him on meds at the beginning of third grade. Within 2 weeks he was reading at his grade level. As you have seen, the transformation can be remarkable. He stayed on his meds until he was 16, at which time he decided that he wanted to do it on his own. He graduated from high school, served a mission for our church which required him to learn another language, went to college, just bought his first house & is getting married in July to a wonderful, sweet young woman. I couldn't be more proud of the man he has become. There were days I never thought we'd make it, but we did...and you will too.
Smiles, Debbie
